SSGC History

The SSGC is also known as Sui Southern Gas Company, based in Karachi. SSGC history shows that SSGC is one of the most important public sector organizations in the natural gas industry. This company is responsible for gas transmission to the southern part of Pakistan, mainly in Sindh and Balochistan. Working under government ownership, SSGC plays a very important role in the Pakistan energy sector and economy. Now SSGC has continued to expand its pipeline network and adapt to the changing energy requirements of Pakistan.

Discovery of Sui Gas Fields

This gas was discovered in 1952 in an area of Balochistan named Sui, and then it became known as Sui gas. It was Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) that made a big discovery and became the country’s largest natural gas field ever. They started pumping it in 1955, transmitted gas via pipelines towards Karachi, and became the backbone of Pakistan’s gas supply.

Development of Gas Infrastructure in Pakistan

After the discovery of the Sui Gas field, Pakistan began laying the foundation of modern gas infrastructure. In April 1955, the primary focus was to supply gas for both household and commercial use. The company started building pipelines from Sui to major cities and industrial centers. These gas projects connect cities to a steady energy source and also set the stage for expanding gas services nationwide.

Start of Sui Southern Gas Company

As gas consumption increased in the southern part of Pakistan, there was a need for a special and dedicated organization to handle gas transmission and distribution in an organized way. In 1989, Sui Southern Gas Company was formed to meet this demand. Over time, the company turned into a public sector utility and strengthened Pakistan’s energy framework.

Expansion of Gas Transmission and Distribution Network

With the rising demand for Sui gas, SSGC gradually expanded its transmission and distribution network in the south. New pipelines were laid to meet gas fields with industrial and residential areas. According to the company’s official profile, SSGC has:

  • Over 4,200 km of high-pressure transmission pipelines (up to 42 inches in diameter).
  • Around 50,000 km of distribution pipelines.

Major Milestones in the History of SSGC

Since its formation, SSGC has achieved multiple milestones that have helped grow Pakistan’s economy. The early expansion of gas transmission pipelines marked the beginning of organized natural gas supply in the southern regions of the country.

  • In 1955, several gas companies such as Sui Gas Transmission Company Limited (SGTC), Karachi Gas Company Limited, and Indus Gas Company Limited joined together and became SSGC, expanding gas distribution across southern Pakistan.
  • From the 1990s onward, SSGC expanded its pipeline network significantly to keep up with growing urban and industrial demand, strengthening its role as a key supplier of gas to residential, commercial, and industrial users.
  • After 2000, SSGC set up South Asia’s only gas meter manufacturing plant, partnering initially with Schlumberger and later with Itron. The plant produces over 1.5 million meters each year and has enabled the local production of advanced meter components.
  • In 2012, SSGC launched SSGC LPG Limited (a wholly-owned subsidiary) for LPG marketing and distribution, starting terminal and bottling operations.
  • In 2022, SSGC established SSGC Alternate Energy (Pvt.) Ltd. to explore alternative gas supply solutions and diversify into new non-operating revenue streams.
  • Between 2023 and 2025, SSGC achieved record milestones in network rehabilitation—rehabilitating 735 km of pipelines in FY 2022–23 alone—and completed major pipeline projects. This included six dedicated high-pressure pipelines in Karachi, such as the 24-inch, 31 km line from ACPL to Surjani in 2024, along with lines in Korangi, Landhi, and SITE. These projects helped segregate industrial and domestic supply, improve gas pressures, and reduce unaccounted-for gas (UFG) losses to below OGRA benchmarks for the first time in decades

SSGC’s Environmental and Safety Initiatives

Sui Southern Gas Company has taken multiple steps to address environmental protection and safety in its operations. To minimize leakage, SSGC focuses on better transmission and distribution of Sui gas.

UFG Reduction and Leakage Control:

A major part of SSGC’s environmental strategy is reducing Unaccounted-for Gas (UFG), which includes technical losses caused by pipeline leakages—a key source of methane emissions. SSGC has made fast progress through large-scale network rehabilitation, segregation of industrial and domestic gas supplies, and strong anti-theft initiatives. Between 2023 and 2025, SSGC carried out record rehabilitation of hundreds of kilometers of pipelines each year, bringing UFG levels below regulatory benchmarks in several areas.

Pollution Prevention and Regulatory Compliance:

SSGC operates in line with the Pakistan Environmental Protection Act (1997) and OGRA regulations, with a focus on preventing pollution and reducing environmental impacts across its operations.

Promotion of Cleaner Energy Alternatives:

Through its subsidiary, SSGC LPG Limited, established in 2012, the company promotes LPG as a cleaner alternative to conventional fuels.

Sui Southern Gas Company has played a significant role in the development of Pakistan’s natural gas sector, particularly in the southern regions of the country. SSGC has supported industrial growth and improved energy access for millions of consumers.
